Shutdown gdm (/etc/init.d/gdm stop), and then start x via `startx` and
let it crash, then look at the console output for an error message and
paste it here.
Also, thank you for attaching your Xorg.0.log, however you did not
indicate whether that was produced with xorg.conf from comment #2 or #4.

to run without an xorg.conf you need to delete or rename that file. then
X will attempt to auto configure.
if this does not help you can get back a xorg.conf be using the recovery
mode at boot time, and choosing 'fix x'
