Still an issue in 13.04 / 12.10 / 12.04 :/
Please let me know how I can help solve this.
PS: The only thing that works is to install from a USB optical drive.
PPS: How do I change the issue status back to "new"? It seems I don't
have the permission to do so.

Complete system hangs like this are typically kernel bugs rather than
installer bugs, so reassigning to linux.
That said, you might be able to work around the problem by using the
alternate install CD (thereby tickling a different set of bugs).

Attach a USB-DVD-Rom to to computer an Boot the Ubuntu-Installcd from
