I don't see any issue in the small testcase text.pdf. I tested using
development build revision 21307.
I see an letter "u" and a "1". I attach the exported png. Do you have an other
testcase?
Please retest and report.

I could open the pages I tried from http://www.maxim-
ic.com/getds.cfm?qv_pk=4023 , maybe the problem is page-specific, and
you should tell with page you want to open?
My Platform is Mandriva 2009, i686,
Inkscape 0.46 installed from urpmi official repositories.

I don't know if this is exactly the same error, but I get something very
similar. A quite minimal testcase is included as an attachment. It can
be produced by pdftex from the following source:
\documentclass[a4paper,12pt]{article}
\usepackage{amssymb}
\begin{document}
$\approxeq$
\end{document}
