I'm having the same problem when logging off from a second user.
I mean:
- I boot ubuntu and enter with my user
- I open another session with a second user
- I log off from the second user to go back to my user => blank screen
I'm unable to do anything: neither CTRL+ALT+DEL neither
CTRL+ALT+BACKSP
I am experiencing a similar problem. It happens when I try to log off
after having switched users. The switching to another user still works
but when logging off the screen turns black and the computer does not
react to input.
Using Ubuntu 10.04 lucid with Gnome and NVIDIA driver version 173.14.12
Boot and login work. Logging out causes the screen to go black and flash
colored patterns every few seconds. Ctrl+Alt+F2 does nothing, but REISUB
works.
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (via upgrade from 9.10)
Dell Dimension 2400
Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device

Hardware: Dell Dimension 8200
It's an older system with a proprietary Nvidia card inside.
I'm using the proprietary Nvidia driver.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

i think it's gdm, but then again it might be xorg-driver-fglrx, because
without that driver this problem doesn't happen... its only with that
driver
