Did you allready try the Intrepid Beta? Big chance it's fixed there.
Also, in Ubuntu 8.04.1, try adding the following to the "Screen" section
of /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 2560 2048
EndSubSection
