Same problem here, more details:
Touchpad works whenever I do not get this in warning in the xorg
logfile:
(ww) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad can't grab event device, errno=16
This warning happends randomly, as far as I can see. Even when the
touchpad does not work, the touchpad buttons DO work.

I formatted and rebuilt the system from scratch. The touchpad is back
to normal now. I don't know if we just want to call this a fluke and
close the bug or if it's something you guys are still looking into.

Maybe, but to my understanding the kernel can assign that to whatever it
likes based on what it finds first. The question is why, but that is
beyond my world of knowledge.

(/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report. Could you please also try to
run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display
and video card and touchpad? Please

I added the 'Load"synaptics"' line to the module section in
xorg.conf and rebooted. Still no luck.

I noticed you are also not loading the synoptics module, maybe this is
the problem?
