This Bug still exits in Karmic Koala.
It can be solved easily by adding the user at the lp group but it is
very enerving and costs a lot of time to find this out.
Please fix this "issue" for the lts release.

Unfortunately, Launchpad isn't 'my' database. If it were I would manage it
differently,
with clearer delineations between versions of Ubuntu, rather than allowing

version reports to confuse and confound effective solution finding !

from a previous install of Ubuntu. I'd have to dig out the old hard disk and
boot it to remember which version, exactly, but on a prior version of Ubuntu

It's partially working in Jaunty Beta, displaying four of the six ink
cartridge levels for my Epson Stylus PHOTO R220.
Hopefully it will be even better in the formal release., which I
will re-check, not bothering with Release Candidate One (RC1).

I think it's not a good idea to put all permitions to /dev/usb/lp0.
It's probably better to only add user in the group lp :
# sudo adduser lp
The problem is that when we define a new user, it is not assign by
default to the lp group...

The problem is with permissions to use the printer.
if you
sudo chmod 777 /dev/usb/lp0
("/dev/usb/lp0" or where the device is)
then inkblot does work.
I don't know if this permission will survive printer disconnection or reboot.
