I think I've searched half the internet and finally read this post. At
first, I didn't believe a BIOS update would help. But I've tried so many
things (another distro, with battery, without battery) and then (just
before almost getting desperate) I finally gave the BIOS update a try,
too. My laptop
Confirmed that a BIOS update fixes the problem on *my* dad's M35X-S149
:-)
Paul: The sudden power-off during the BIOS update freaked me out too,
but after running through that a few times, I noticed that a fraction of
a second beforehand it gave a message like "update complete, rebooting
system."
Alright, 3 people have demonstrated it to be a bug in the BIOS, not in
the kernel.

Excellent! I did this on my dad's laptop over the weekend and it worked
perfectly. I had a minor heart attack when I upgraded the BIOS since it
was going along no problem and then BANG without warning the machine
powered off--I've done enough BIOS upgrades to freak out that I'd just
turned my dad
Thanks so much Mac. I had the exact problem with my toshiba m35x. I also
had the battery indicator problem as well (I just installed 9.04 and
discarded WinXP). I followed your steps on updating my bios and voila,
it is booting up just fine and the battery indicator is working
properly. I appreciate
Got it working.
Fix : Upgrade Laptop Bios
How: go to toshiba.com and download the latest version bios for your
model.
My bios was at v1.20 >> now at v2.00 (hit F2 on boot to see version)
Download the exe file from toshiba - you do not need to be in MS Windows
- safer that way too :-)

My MX35 dows the same thing, trying to upgrade from a solid 7.04 to the
new 9.04, turns off within 5 seconds of displaying the desktop.
1 boot in 10 I can use the laptop properly, no issues at all.

That's an excellent question; I don't remember if I tried that or not.

Well, it's been like this for quite a while now and there are no other
signs of any kind of instability on the system. And of course as I
mentioned, if I use the older kernel it works fine. And, this system
can dual-boot Windows and Windows doesn't seem to have any problems with
it.
Also, it doe
Hi Paul,
This definitely seems like an odd problem and almost seems like it would
be hardware related. Either a power supply starting to go bad or mabye
the CPU overheating and therefore shutting down the system. Just
curious if you've also investigated faulty hw being the culprit?

I created an Ubuntu 8.10 install CD and tried to boot off that; it also
powered down the system after some amount of time. The system got to
the point where it was trying to load the desktop, then shut off.

I added a new /etc/init.d script that just uses logger to generate a
message every second and set it up to start automatically at S99. After
rebooting a number of times it seems that the system goes about 85
seconds (lowest I got was 84; highest 87) after it starts my script at
S99, then reboots.

OK, I installed 2.6.27-11 from proposed but still see the same behavior.
After a minute or two the laptop simply powers down.

Here's something weird. I upgraded to 8.10, but my kernel still says
2.6.25, not 2.6.27. It's like the new Intrepid kernel was not
installed...?!?!
I wonder if setting a "keep" on the older kernel caused a problem. I'm
going to forcibly install the newer Intrepid kernel.

He didn't bring it last time. But, he's visiting again so I have access
to this laptop until Wednesday morning EST (7 Jan 2009). Earlier this
week I tried upgrading to 8.10, but it was a disaster. First, it
doesn't fix this bug; after a minute or so the laptop powers down. I
