fixes are in the current Ubuntu libavg package.

There are at least two bugs being discussed here in parallel.
The segfault in comment #4 is fixed upstream (svn rev. 2384, 2007-10-31
probably fixes it. I additionally committed a change today (libavg rev. 4549)
that makes these lines of code conform to the C++ standard.)
