Thanks for testing and the update guys. I'll tentatively mark this "Fix
Released" for Intrepid. If you notice any regressions regarding this
bug prior to Intrepid final, please reopen this by setting the status
back to "New". Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
Ok the previous link solved my problem, but I am not sure my problem was
related to the first description of the bug. My problem is more related
to LP #200338
Sorry for the noise, I'll post the link there.

About this bug, I got hit too, it seems that for kernels 2.6.24.19 and
2.6.24.20, the snd-hda-intel module fails to load (unknown symbol errors
on snd-hda-codec and snd-hda-intel appear in dmesg - I can get the logs
if needed
Ooops ALSA works fine, but PulseAudio chooses the PC Speaker as the
output device instead of the real output device. I don't know why this
happens only with 2.6.26 and not 2.6.24. I have turned off the use of
pulseaudio in System > Preferences > Sound.

Last remark is probably irrelevant, I just checked and the bug did not
affect the same laptop at the time.
Here is more info, I hope it is useful:

I used to have the same problem when I updated to Hardy beta but it was fixed
before release:

Are you sure you didn't drop an important patch when upgrading the
kernel and alsa? Looks like a regression.

Last dist-upgrade fixed packages problems. However, sound is still missing with
this kernel:
Linux chris-laptop 2.6.26-2-generic #1 SMP Thu Jun 19 15:51:43 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
Note: I checked and my volume is up and sound was not mute. Moreover,
sound works perfectly with hardy's kernel.
Fo

does not return any package.

No, looks like this is not simply an update problem.
I tried this kernel (with restricted modules installable and installed):

GNU/Linux
I still don't have any sound (exception GDM intro, but no gnome intro
after login).

I confirm that I have no sound since I upgraded to intrepid either (I
tried rhythmbox and totem). My intel audio chipset is pretty common
