Also, on what basis is this believed to be a NVIDIA driver bug? I am a
programmer (Haskell, Scheme mostly) and I'm naturally skeptical... I
suppose it might be, but I am certainly not convinced that's the case.

Incidentally, I was completely up to date as of this partial crash this
morning, and I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS by Gigabyte, and I use
the binary drivers.
