It has something to do with locale settings. With locale set to
en_US.UTF-8 it works, with locale setting to nl_NL.UTF-8 (I also tried
pl_PL, but also doesn't work)

This only worked when I removed the package openoffice-gtk from synaptic.

Yes there is definitely a bug somewhere but what it is seems to be
somewhat hard to track down since it appears to be due to a
configuration option in the users dotdir causing the problem. If it
stops working for you again then please let me know and I can get you to
send me a copy of your .openoff
I confirm that removing ~/.openoffice.org2 folder solve the problem.
But, Chris, do you think that this problem is fixed ?? It should be
marked as a bug if some users should remove manually the
~/.openoffice.org2 folder !!! no ??

Try removing ~/.openoffice.org2 and see if that helps. I am running
2.4.1~rc2-1ubuntu1 just fine here on another amd64 machine. If it
doesn't make certain your system is fully up to date with hardy-proposed
then try again.
