to trigger the issue easily and are better placed to reply to their
questions than somebody who doesn't?

Oh, yes, it's mostly ping, but there are some others sometimes like sh,
df, lsb_release, and some that are just blank. I'm pretty sure these
are all spawned by Azureus. They might also be because of the Ono
plugin, at least the pings.

do you get the same sorting issue running other software or is that
specific to those ping commands? could you describe how to trigger the
bug on a stock installation?

I'm using Hardy. What do you mean by "other softwares?" Other distros?
The "top" command doesn't have the problem.
