This behavior also occurs on Lucid 64-bit, with version 1.0-1.1ubuntu1.
I switched to parcellite and that seems to work correctly.

Mouse highlighting does _not_ work properly in current Jaunty. Using
highlighting on the desktop, in say, the browser, floods history with
sequence of letters in manner described, erasing previous history.

Good workaround for all glipper bugs is to install package parcellite
(or install newer version from source).

There is 'grow' plugin now, which should implement desired behavior.
But:
1) it is disabled by default
2) it doesn't always work as expected (often flooding clipboard history)
