I am closing this bug as "Won't fix" since it is caused by a bug in the
hardware+firmware of the PC, whereby the device identifies itself
incorrectly.
The workaround
echo "options psmouse proto=exps" | sudo tee -a
/etc/modprobe.d/psmouse.conf
manually tells the driver to use the Microsoft Intell

activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue?
Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images
are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .
