I'm having same kind of issue with intrepid and nvidia glx-new drivers
if it matters.
I can reproduce this just right clicking any desklet or playing with
system monitor.
Can this be related to nvidia driver in some way, i never had such issue
before my upgrade from hardy ?

gdm crashes after
I'm experiencing this same problem - it began after I installed a new
SATAII-drive (Samsung, 500 Gb) to my machine. I haven't been able to
find anything useful in the logs, only gdm warning regarding
gdm_slave_xioerrror.
I'm prepared to perform a backtrace about the problem.
Attached is my Xorg.0.
Please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and collect a full backtrace on
the crash - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for details.
