I just installed the karmic package linux-image-2.6.31-9-generic.
Booting it led to a blank screen, but that's probably because I forgot
to disable kernel modesetting. I'll try that again.

It still is unfortunately. It hadn't happened for a long time and then
another freeze occured a couple of days ago. I am not sure if the system
was under heavy load, though.

I also experience frequent system freezes under heavy load. Even though
I am using Ubuntu 9.04 (amd64), I had the very same problems with Ubuntu
8.10 (i386), too.
The freezes are quite easy to reproduce when running BOINC or ripping a
DVD (for instance using k9copy).
