I think the intent of this request is covered by the Ubuntu Friendly
community testing program. Due to this, and the fact that this bug is
related to hwtest, which has been obsolete for quite a while, I'll set
this as invalid.

Instead of writing an additional script, couldn't the existing hwtest
/hwtest-gtk to have a quiet mode that would collect the required
information automatically shortly after boot every so often?

This is surely a great idea, but this can be accomplished using tools
that are in the default installation.
Instead of creating a new daemon to sit there idle for 1-2 months at a
time and using memory when it's not needed (even if it's very small), we
can setup a 'root' cron job to run a simple sc
