I've had a similar problem, I copied one file to a memory card using
nautilus, copying another one with a similar file cause nautilus to
starting using 100% CPU and increasing memory usage. Killing the
nautilus window and forcibly quiting stopped the runaway process.

Sorry, at the moment I have my plate full with field work in the Amazon,
but here's some food for thought:
I bypassed the root folder of the ext. USB HDD by typing the address
into Nautilus directly (i.e.: /media/disk/subfolder) and it showed up
the contents normally. Then, recalling your comment

it's eating cpu and get a stacktrace?

Working on getting a valgrind log (on very poor bandwidth in the rain
forest, so takes quite some time to download!)
Do you mean a Scalable Vector Graphics image file?
I don't, but wonder why it would cause a problem? I understood that
Nautilus included svg support for many years...

Thanks for your bug report. Could you try to get a valgrind log for the
crash (you can follow the instructions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind)?
Do you have a svg on the usb disk which could create the issue?
