I appear to be getting this bug when trying to start gnome 2.18 on
FreeBSD 6.2 ( actually PC-BSD 1.4 ). The two screens seem to get locked
up while a "looping situation" continually draws white bands across top
and bottom of the two screens, which then crash and disapear, re-
appearing after 30 sec

Uhm, no.
I've switched jobs and it's highly unlickly I will find the time and
hardware to re-test this... :(
