We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response
from the original reporter, and the me-too'er did not provide the usual
required X bug files (Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf, lspci -vvnn, xrandr
--verbose). However, if the issue still exists please feel free to
reopen with the request

correction: apt-term.log was not empty (had permission issue.)

I am attaching my dist-upgrade logs.
For me, I am able to see the login prompt (thanks to a wide style
monitor) but do not see the entire log-in screen as it should appear.
Buttons for safe shutdown, etc at the bottom are off screen.

I have seen this issue on my current home computer and my former office
computer after upgrading to Hardy from Gutsy. I will provide my upgrade
logs as requested in this bug report.
