but this was one of our developement PC's here and has now been setup to
use Suse. The problem appeared to be related to the change in XORG and
lack of supprt in the early releases of fglrx and configuration tools.

Your screen is fine again after uninstalling these apps?
With your screen appearing correctly, execute the following command:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf > ~/xorg
then install fglrx and get to an improper state. execute the following
