off Visual Effects to see if that helps speed it up? Its under
System->Preferences->Appearance.

this problem is still happening on one of my profiles and is quite
severe. i don't know what to do next. is there an easy method for
creating a new profile and migrating all the data over? (except
hopefully whatever is causing OO to run unusably slow.) Basically
imagine the toolbar having to be

Unfortunately no, but I appreciate the suggestion. If anything I'd almost
say it makes it run slower! Again it seems strange to me that its only a
problem on this one account.

I am having this problem as well - same Ubuntu version, OpenOffice
2.4.1. Interestingly, the problem only occurs on one of my user
accounts.
Basically OpenOffice is almost impossible to use it is so slow.
Resizing the window results in the virtually the entire window being
redrawn before my eyes,
