The solution was to install on an ext2 partition, that worked for me. I
haven't installed Ubuntu recently so I can't tell if this is still a
problem. I had this issue about a year ago and if you successfully
installed on ext3 partitions then I guess it's fixed.

mount point?
I can assure you I've installed grub on tons of ext3 partitions without an
issue.
Also, do you know if this is still an issue for you with the latest Ubuntu?

Finally found the solution here:

Apparently this is a "known bug" when installing Grub on an ext3
partition. Tonight I tried installing on ext2 and it worked. I am glad I
got it working but also disappointed about such a showstopping bug

did you has check your md5sum with your iso image downloaded ?. or try
to use another ubuntu CD installer.
I have the same problem, however I'm trying to install Kubuntu 8.04 from
CD image. The error message (also at 94%) I get is: Executing 'grub-
install (hd0)' failed. My laptop has one 200GB harddrive, 3 partitions.
Windows XP is on the first partition. The other 2 partitions are ext3
