Dell's Wiki has instructions on repairing the audio after an upgrade
from 7.10 to 8.04. I think this problem is only exists for people who
have the hsfmodem (3rd party) package installed, which only comes on
Dell's version of Ubuntu (m

I don't know if I can help you. I wrote that over a year ago. At the
bottom of my screen it said there were updates available. I clicked on
it and installed the upgrades. One of them was a sound program. The
sound died on my computer. After checking everything I went online to
the page you foun
I'm having this same problem with my Inspiron too. Have tried various
fixes including check and installing any missing sound modules and
uninstalling and reinstalling ALSA. Still no joy!
Suggestions on a permanent fix for this anyone?

Thanks SPARX, I've got an inspiron 1720 with an audio card as described
below. Using Hardy- sound was fine until a recent update must've
altered something and everything went mute. Turning off ESD recovered
the sound.

I definitely had this problem in Hardy (_quite_ annoying) on my Inspiron
1420, and found it magically started working when I updated to Intrepid
(at least, with the 2.6.26 kernel). I did have to unmute it in
alsamixer, but sound's been working great since then.
