Alex, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .
OK - Radeon HDMI audio is definitely available in recent kernels, but it
has been disabled by the upstream kernel developers as it causes blank
screens on a lot of systems.
You can re-enable HDMI audio by adding "radeon.audio=1" to your GRUB
boot options.

Once again the sound is not working on my aunt's computer win Ubuntu 10.04
(Lucid).
apport-bug is failing (infinite wait), so that does not help.
Last time I had the same problem it was due to the missing package
linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) in the ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa
repository
