I deleted mnemosyne from the site-packages and then I reinstalled mnemosyne
from the Ubuntu repository. Now mnemosyne is working great!

Yes, I installed from source first. I expect that you are right and that it

The Traceback shows the crash happens in the file
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/mnemosyne/core/mnemosyne_core.py
This file is not used by the Ubuntu package. The Ubuntu package would install
that file as
/usr/share/python-support/mnemosyne/mnemosyne/core/mnemosyne_core.py and create
a symlin
