I have half this problem - I notice that the preview pane does not load,
but shows the left-overs from the menu - this I get.
However I have no problem actually setting the keyboard to uk for me.

I gave X an emergency restart, and the keyboard layout was then correct.

Since the actual Hardy release, I no longer get an error message, but
the layout still does not set correctly.
Layout: United Kingdom
Variant: Default
I set the layout to this ^, and all appears fine, but when typing, some
keys produce the wrong character, as if it were the US layout. I tried
