I had this problem with a fresh install on a eee pc 1000ha. The
following thread got wired networking going for me:

Hi hi,
Just installed eeebuntu standard 1.0 on an eeepc 1000, which is ubuntu
8.04. ifconfig -a shows my card, and I attempted turning off and
unplugging everything including battery, but no luck, it doesn't
acknowledge any connection at all, not even through ethernet cord...
when going to networ
Ethernet doesn't work either with Ubuntu 8.04 after installation on hard
disk partition on top of Windows. EeePC 1000H. Shutdown-remove battery
does not help.

confirmed,had a Eee 900 16G after fresh install of Unbuntu 8.04,wired
connection doesn't work, but after workaround(shutdown and remove
battery) it works.

Me too. My eeepc 701 4G used to have a perfectly working ethernet port
with the original Xandros. Later on, I upgraded the bios to version
0901, and I started running Kubuntu 8.04 from a flash usb drive. I am
not sure which of these two affected the ethernet connection, but it no
longer works in Xa
Indeed it is extremely important to specify WHICH Eee PC model you have;
apparently there are huge differences in hardware across the many Eee
models.

First off, the DVD version is a bit of a messy thing if i recall correctly.
Secondly, the eeePC 100x series have entirely different hardware, so
this is a different bug.
