Sorry for the delay... I can confirm that
sudo rm -rf /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/mnemosyne
allows mnemosyne to work -- however I did test it remotely via ssh (so
it simply told me "mnemosyne: cannot connect to X server" which is what
it should tell me if I'm not running it wi

If the error is reported on
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/mnemosyne/core/mnemosyne_core.py that means
the user has installed mnemosyne directly from source. If the Ubuntu version
would be used, the error message would come from
/var/lib/python-support/python2.5/mnemosyne/core/mnemosyne_core.
Are you sure you had 1.0-0ubuntu3 installed when this happened? I'm
staring at "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-
packages/mnemosyne/core/mnemosyne_core.py", line 1425 in the .deb in the
archive and it says class XML_Importer(ContentHandler):, not class
XML_Importer(saxutils.DefaultHandler): (which is what
