I also have this problem, I don't know why ubuntu developer did this
problem for the new release where it suppose to be the greatest server ever
released by ubuntu.

I get pretty much the same error when booting the 24-17 kernel after
upgrade to hardy from gutsy

untill i pull the power plug and sta
i upgraded as well earlier in beta. im sad to see that this bug hasn't been
fixed yet. I have a Dell, if that tells you anything
i need to look up my system's parts...
