Kubuntu 8.10 live CD session update:
- the System settings does not have anymore any sound test, unless I'm blind?
Just some "Sound" settings to list devices.
- used Amarok to play some default sample which is included
- the simple volume in tray works ok, changing volume up and down.

I did seen already HDA Intel notebook which did work correctly, so it looks
like just some specific board/driver is affected, not all of them.
If anyone will give me instructions how to collect relevant data, I will add it
here.

I'm getting the exact same behavior on my computer.
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
tells me the onboard sound card is Realtek ALC888
Kubuntu 8.04, motherboard intel g33fb, snd-hda-intel sound module.

On different PC with SiS Sl7012 (on-board AC97 kind of thing?)
everything works ok, so it may be related to HDA Intel on-board audio
only.
