Am seeing this too, using Totem Movie Player on a Lenovo T61 ThinkPad
with Nvidia proprietary drivers.
This can be fixed by moving the "Hue" slider, as indicated above.
Suggests to me this is a Totem problem, and one which could be fixed.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu?
The same thing happened to me and all the video players started showing
negative colors. The fix was to change the hue value in the setting in
Totem. I have a an nVidia GeForce 8400M GS graphics card and use the
proprietary driver that comes with Ubuntu 8.04.

I was able to SOLVE the problem on my system. Playing movie in Totem
(which was playing in inverse colors) I opened Edit->Options, tab Video
and changed value of the last slider, Hue. Video plays in correct colors
if slider is set to min or max values, inverse colors are shown if
slider is in middl
Story is same in 64-bit or 32-bit installations. Removing "proprietary"
nvidia drivers makes video play correctly.
