I suspect that you did not install Ubuntu 8.10. I just did and the
problem you documented is not present. Recommend that you download a new
copy of Ubuntu 8.10 and reinstall it. Good luck!

I've just had the same thing happen in Ubuntu 8.10. The key was changed
from a password to a hexadecimal value. Re-entering the password
doesn't work, it is just changed to a new random value. I've tried
restarting but to no avail.

I am seeing the same problem with a D-Link WDA-1320 wireless card.
Also, the problem happens whenever I stop and restart the interface; a
system restart is not required.
