I was experiencing this bug too, but the updated package linked to in
the comments above corrected the issue. Can we get this fix into the
Ubuntu repositories?

Hey, I'm developer on PyChess, and we've had a few errors like this before.
I've commited a fix for the 0.8.1 branch, but I think it is really a python or
pygtk problem. The following code _should_ not give any problems.
