Gateway M-6319 has similar problem. Brightness doesn't work by either function
keys nor brightness applet.
The function keys works following hacks on /etc/apci/video_brightnessup.sh and
/etc/acpi/video_brightnessdown.sh as described on following forum threads:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.
Same problem with Gateway M-6319 laptop from Costco.
The hack mentioned at forum

works for the function keys but the brightness applet for panel doesn't
work still.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y510. Using Gutsy, I had no problems with screen
brightness settings and using Fn+up/down to control it. However, I just
upgraded to 8.04 Hardy, and now my brightness settings are reversed! The
icon on the screen indicates that I am increasing brightness with Fn+up,

I can confirm this as well.
It worked fine initially when I upgraded to Heron (it didn't work at all
in Feisty), but after the recent kernel updates, it no longer works.
I hope this can make it into the final release!

With several people commenting on it from various laptops, I figure this

how to fix things.

I wonder if this issue has anything to do with my crash every time boot

Here's the bug report on the atieventsd crash:

BTW, this bug still exists in the 2.6.24-15 module.

I have the same problem as above after the recent update from 2.6.24-12
to 2.6.24-14 on my Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop but I have no way to adjust
the brightness on the display anymore so my display is stuck on minimum
brightness.
