I have a fresh install of Ubuntu Hardy and " System > Preferences >
Appearance > Desktop Effects" shows no 'custom' button after installing
'compizconfig-settings-manager'. I even purged it and reinstalled and it
doesn't show up.
Please note that the alternative program is called 'simple-ccsm', NO
As far as I remember, ccsm added the option on installation in Gutsy.

Isn't this a bit backwards? Instead of having ccsm installation add the
option, shouldn't the option always exist, and if it is selected, ccsm
should be installed if it is not already installed, and then launched? I
thought this was the Gutsy behavior. Has this specifically been changed?

Following the suggestion from Brian Murray, I could get the "Custom"
option back in the Visual Effects tab by installing simple-ccsm
$ sudo apt-get install simple-ccsm
