It sounds like you installed the bootloader to the primary hard drive.
You are able to select whether or not to install the bootloader and the
install location for it in the advanced dialog on the summary page.
Converting to a question as this is not a bug.

When I booted with the flash drive in, the grub menu came up and I
could boot to xp. With out the flash drive I get an error and it will
not boot to xp.
The grub must initiate from the hard drive.
I know, I should dump xp.
