Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

Ok, actually the problem isn't in Gnome, but in compiz. The colours in
the workspace switcher are fine when compiz is turned off.

I found an old screenshot of mine on breezy and you can see how the
colours of the workspace switcher have evolved. I think the way breezy
used to display it is way clearer and should be reverted to. (I don't
know about in-between Ubuntu releases).

I agree. Apparently the only clue I get is that the active window has a
white center instead of an orange one. But if the window is small, that
amounts to nothing (see enclosed). Furthermore, the indication doesn't
change until after I've stopped switching (at least with a compiz
desktop cube).

Thank you for your suggestion. However, the changes you are requesting
aren't really a bug and require more discussion, which should be done on
an appropriate mailing list or forum.

I think it's too late to do anything about this -
"HardyArtworkFinalDeadline" was passed on March 13th, and I think theme
colors count. You can use the gnome-color-chooser, I think it's in the
hardy universe repo now, to modify this if you want.
