And *drums roll* it is finally over! I am happily writing this comment

thanks to everyone who helped solve this heinous bug!

I confirm the UI bug with both compat-wireless and network-manager 0.7
up-to-date. Should this bug (regarding the driver) be closed and a new
one (regarding network-manager) be opened?

Ok, a bunch of news for this bug. Namely, it does support the encryption
of my campus network, but there seems to be some incompatibility issues
among the driver, Network Manager, and the dhcp client used by Ubuntu
(dhclient). I am able to connect shutting down NetworkManager, killing

Even worse news: I tried the most up-to-date compat wireless drivers
(old version for kernels <2.6.27, 07 september) and with those drivers
connection still did not function. Bug not fixed upstream I fear. :-( I
am notifying the intel developers right now.

Ok, I tried the alpha with the new kernel today. The bug is NOT fixed:
while I can connect using the ipw driver in hardy, the same settings in
the alpha do not allow for the connection to be established.
If there is some particular testing I can do to spread some light on the
matter, please do ask
Update: using Compat Wireless drivers (latest updated 6th of August)
does not fix the problem. Indeed, they actually crash keyboard using
after resume from suspend. I will try with Alpha 5 live cd next week.

Well, what can I say, it was a complete disaster. First of all, the
kernel stopped cold while booting after installation, at the "Loading
hardware drivers" step. I deduced, correctly, that this happened because
xserver-xorg packages where not up-to-date and configured to work with
this kernel ... s
Dear Ogasawara,
I am doing that right now. I have no chance
to really test the wireless bug until next week (when I will be back on
campus) but I can surely point to any other problems coming my way.
Luckily this will be not the first time I install (and eventually

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

It seems that the problem has been fixed upstream. By monday I will try
this out using both a live cd (Intrepid) and the compat-wireless drivers
(Hardy). Let us hope Linux has got rid of this bug :-)

Hi Leann,
no problem at all. The patch will be released, when ready, at
http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/download/compat-wireless-2.6
/compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
which is updated daily. However, to the best of my knowledge, they are
still working on it. I tried the modules in this

Hi Luke,
Sorry for the delayed response. I don't suppose you have a link to the
patch they're referencing in the upstream bug report? Thanks.

According to Reinette Chatre, the bug is in the mac80211 module, not in

No luck, sadly. At least, however, now I have LED support. By the way,
how come this patched module is in the backports package instead of the
main one?

Hi Luke12,
An updated version of iwlwifi (version 1.2.25) was recently pulled into
linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-14.11:
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports-modules-2.6.24
. Care to try installing the linux-backports-modules package with the
updated iwlwifi version to see if
