It turned out that not only Hintstyle was ignored, but also switching
between Subpixel and grayscale AA wasn't supported. Defining LCDFitler
wasn't working as well.
I have created a patch comprehensively addressing this issues:

Finally
Update: it is xrdb xft.hintstyle that is read by Cairo as the "System-
wide" setting.
