It seems totem no longer crashes with today's update. (I could try to
install the previous version to diagnose the original problem.)

This is a totem bug. Totem crashed. It's triggered a second bug in
apport. Whether the entire system going down is due to totem (without
apport) or apport has not yet been determined. (When this is triaged
properly, it may be split off into two bugs.)

Ouch! I thought this went away, but I just tried it again and it played
a split second of the sound and then crashed my system again. The video
became garbled and then X restarted itself.
I found this in my syslog:

Did that problem appear again? If yes, is it possible to listen to the
sound file with other players? if you try to run it in a terminal (run
"totem 1860v2.mp3"), is there some output before it crashes?

No problem here (on hardy beta). But when I played it the first time (in
the browser) the mouse pointer got stuck for some seconds. Maybe the
load was too much for your computer?
