This also fixed it for me with a new install of 24.0.1 LTS (preserving
/home). New install was necessary because upgrade was unbootable...

When migrating hunderbird from deb to snap this should be done by

I'm also seeing this problem with links not working and removing the
handlers.json also fixed it for me.

I have found a solution. I removed
~/snap/thunderbird/common/.thunderbird/8sbugc0d.default/handlers.json
and restarted Thunderbird. The links are now working.
