I'm having a similar problem. I'm using openvpn 2.1_rc7 386 on the client side and the tunnel to the openvpn server has a very high latency with frequent drops in connectivity. Using openvpn 2.0.9 on the same machine with a different OS works fine. I'd be happy to post more details / file a new

shaggy: the error you get looks like you don't reach the OpenVPN server at all. Could you retry without the "local 127.0.0.1" line in your config ?
