The alternative workaround does not seem to work anymore in Ubuntu 8.10.
Switch to vt1 makes usplash go away, but there is no way to get the
cryptsetup prompt and also blindly typing the password in any of the vts
doesn't work...

Hmm...Is it possible for cryptsetup to prompt in both places (within and
without usplash) at the same time?
Alternatively, is it possible for the following to work:
boot
get to usplash cryptsetup prompt
switch to vt2 (usplash goes away)
switch to vt1
press enter
cryptsetup prompts again
--
boot
invalid for the cryptsetup package. In fact, I had the cryptsetup
package exit usplash for exactly this reason, but it was decided that
this was not bad enough for disabling bootsplash at all, given that
usplash was supposed to be fixed soon.

This is known for quite some time, but I fail to find the duplicate bug.
I personally find that pretty severe, but that's a limitation in
usplash.
