Go to preferences and put to show the new incomming messages on a new
window instead of the bubble. It doesn't solve the problem buy your X
won't crash.

Hi, I have the same problem, Ubuntu 64bit 8.04 Hardy Heron, using Gnome and
Compiz fusion, kopete 0.12.7 running from KDE 3.5.9
machine: laptop Asus AMD Turion64 A6km
Problem happens on first click as Alberto said.

I've had this same problem on (K)Ubuntu Gusty and archlinux (what I'm
currently using). I've noticed it only seems to happen while I'm running
compiz-fusion.
