i decided to have a play around in torcs. In the sound menu i changed it
to use plib. It no longer crashes, so it appears to be a bug in how the
application is using openal for sound.

I think i may have the same problem. At first i thought it was just
crashing about 10 seconds in. Then i realised it was when i hit another
car that it crashed (for example drove into the car to push it out of
way :p ). Is this the same thing as you? I'm using nvidia driver. You
