With a 9.10 system I got the same problem when I started a script with a
modorescue call inside using sudo. If I start the same script as root
the mondorescue works without Problem!

I avoid upgrading without need ;-)
The 9.04-system is the newest installation at hand.
But maybe another guy is willing to make this test:
* installing the package mondo and
* typing the command stated above as root
and waiting a bit is all that has to be done.

latest ubuntu Karmic and check if this problem persist?

On newly installed Ubuntu 9.04 - 64bit desktop:
command line:
mondoarchive -OVi -l GRUB -d system -9 -N -E "/mnt /backup /home /usr/local"
