some of my MP3s needed to be tagged with 2.4 apparently, and 1.X doesn't do it
anyway. I think that the last version hid the fact that 1.X wasn't saving the
unicode characters until you opened them again, or my memory is stupid.

I cannot reproduce this. Please check the following:
- You cannot store Unicode characters in tag 1 (ID3v1.1), only in tag 2
(ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, Vorbis, APE, MP4)
- ID3v2.3.0 only supports UTF16 and ISO-8859-1, and the implementation in
id3lib has some bugs, so you can use ID3v2.4.0 tags (Setting
