Additional: I tried editing the instances of this URL I could find in
the advanced config editor in Thunderbird, so I could tell which one was
being launched (I added /1 and /2 onto the ends of the URLs) and
magically the behaviour stopped.

kernel.This bug is caused by firefox only being able to open one
instance at a time and in the thunderbird package one of the files
states to open a new instance, Atleast that is the most common reason, I

When in Thunderbird a dialog box appears and states:
Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window,
you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your
system.
